And so it comes to a close

Well today marked the last official day of my first semester of grad school, of course I have an additional take home exam to finish by Monday, but generally speaking I am finished.  And again this feeling of time is just foreign to me.  I don't understand how time can be so unintentionally devoid of what I actually am accomplishing.  Honestly speaking, there must be an inverse relationship between accomplishments and how much time it takes to complete them.

For instance, growing up the biggest accomplishment was making a village for lego people incorporating a story with the village and playing out the story...and this seemed to fill a large amount of time, when in reality it was all of a rainy Saturday.  Now I am completing projects that encompass weeks and it feels as if no time passes at all in retrospect.  It just does not make sense, I guess some things in life are meant not to make sense.

I am tired, and need to get my rest all in order to slay this final exam of the semester.  Then I can happily head to D.C. to meander around there with some friends.

I am a Whovian

This past winter  had one lasting effect on me, because I was introduced to the Doctor!!! That's right I watched the entire Doctor Who series from 2005 to now, and we are very close to my one year anniversary of first seeing the TARDIS.  Needless to say that show has had made a pretty big influence on me.  It certainly makes you feel proud to be a human, mistakes and all.  The upside is the great stories and even better villains.  Insert "Exterminate" reference.

The best part of the whole Doctor series is the TARDIS though.  There are so many things about it that make it so great...and validate why I have a giant cardboard cut-out of it in my apartment.  The whole philosophy of being bigger on the inside speaks volumes for people in general.  As well as two of its best quotes from The Doctor's Wife: "Then you stole me. And I stole you." and "No, but I always took you where you needed to go."  Of course you would need to know the general conversations for both of the quotes to make sense; however, they mean so much more.  Ideas that make the best partner on a travel through life...life is made by stolen moments (mistakes) and moments you can't control (coincidences in life you thought would never occur).  In short the Doctor is amazing and should be watched by everyone.

On personal news, the goal is going well.  It is not the easiest in the world since I have some juice in the fridge that I usually have with breakfast, but it falls in the category of those to avoid.  Despite the morning temptation I have been keeping up the water only.

Birthday Celebration

So today is my birthday, and, although, I know I am relatively young...I feel old.  I remember the good ol' days of waking up on Saturday mornings to watch some cartoons.  School work was so simple a little addition there and a little reading there.  Then moved to High School where the weekends began filling up, but basically no stress (at least looking back it was not stressful).  Then College was a bit more busy and classes required me to study.  Now that I am in Grad School living on my own I feel as if I have no time whatsoever to myself and life just seems so much more.

The best part though is that I love it so much, this feeling old, I love it.  The ability to fix whatever I want whenever I want is in one word: awesome.  Having my own apartment the way I want and able to do whatever I want is again in one word: awesome.  So needless to say feeling old comes with the feeling of awesome.  Now I need to be clear by the word awesome I mean its actual definition.  The ability to be awe inspired, not the laxidasical definition that this modern day has imposed...again a feeling of being old.

Well as I stated yesterday I am going to begin a challenge tomorrow for myself for the following month.  The challenge will be to eliminate all sugary drinks from my diet...so no Mt. Dew.  I will also be kicking out any alcoholic beverages except for when I am out, cause I don't want to be antisocial.

Laters, 'til tomorrow.

The Start Over

I have attempted this whole blog thing two times before, this being my third try.  Hopefully, this time I can make it stick.  Both times before I tried to make it as academic as possible and failed, so I am going to go for the personal route.  I want to be a better person...through my eyes...and one way is to be more open.  I figured the more open I am about what I am doing, whether it is working out, watching some Netflix, or thinking about a book I have just read I will be held accountable for it all.

Now this post is going to be a bit on the lazy side because in one hour it will be my Birthday.  In all honesty I am not looking forward to tomorrow because it is going to be a bit longer with classes and such.  But tomorrow night, that I am excited about.  I get to go to a UNC basketball game.  To be honest this will be my first college basketball game.  Well I am off, but I want to leave with another claim, or a challenge for myself.  At the beginning of each month I will set a goal to maintain for a whole month, in hopes that whatever the goal is I will make a habit of it.

Laters all.

Buzz is right

Yesterday there was a commentary posted on CNN.com about the future of the space race. I was born around the time the Berlin Wall fell, which leaves me with no memories of the rivalry. With that in mind it also leaves me with no recollection of the original space race to the moon. Even though I personally have no connection to this part of history, there is a huge part of me that really wants to see another space race...of some kind.

Looking back to history and then quickly glancing towards today, leaves one with awe and amazement of the stories that were left behind. From the exciting Apollo missions to the saddening Challenger and the embodiment of immortalized heroes such as Glenn, Armstrong, and of course Aldrin (the writer of the commentary). Along with this history there is still those controversies that surround many of the events leaving a much deeper interest into space. This interest has spread to the pop media with movies, books, and video games. From classic movies such as 2001: Space Odyssey, Star Trek, and Star Wars to current blockbusters like the just released Transformer sequel, space is shown as a conquerable feat that yields many possibilities. Then the real question is why in today's real world not too many care about space?

Buzz has it partially right with the thought that no competition has impeded on the excitement. Without that competitive drive, it is difficult to concentrate on something abstract with wars breaking out across the globe and attempts at peace are being made between nations. He continues this thought by making the claim that colonization would be a better drive, however, if ever made public (since most people have a feeling that space colonization is a common goal for humanity). I would add to this that the world of nations as a whole needs to look at space as a place for opportunities, not just a place that endlessly devours money. Many people lose sight that the last space race brought forth the technology of the microchip...which I cannot even imagine what life would be like without that discovery. I challenge the world to pursue space not only for the mystery of it or for the practicality of it, but for the benefit for continuing and advancing technology.

"Space: the final frontier" needs to be tested. The statement needs to be changed to "Space: the current frontier." People need this for reasons that I feel are self explanatory, but more importantly space leaves many opportunities that makes it one of the more pertinent topics that needs to be explored. Until the nations of the world see the truth behind this, I am going to keep the stars on my mind, and hopefully you will too.
